Douglass-Maney family papers, 1805-1939.

Papers dealing with the related families of Maney, Murfree, and Douglass of Nashville, Franklin, and Gallatin, Tennessee. Includes ca. 150 letters written by members of all three families, most addressed to Martha Ann Maney Douglass. Of special interest are two letters by Susan Maney Boddie, one dated 1851 concerning cholera in Nashville and Franklin, and another (undated) describing Union troops encamped at the Maney home, Jessamine Hill. Letters of John Bell (1848) contain interesting descriptions of Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The papers also contain accounts, clippings, estate papers, genealogical materials, military papers, and photographs. Other correspondents include Fanny Dickinson Maney Bell, Elizabeth Maney Bowman, James R. Bright, David W. Dickinson, Alfred William Douglass, Elizabeth Maney Murfree Frazer, Martha Ann Long Coakley Murfree Maney, and James Allen Martin.

John Bell was born about 1830 in Ireland and immigrated to the United States with his father before his 21st birthday. He was an insurance and loan agent in Richmond, Indiana in the 1860s and 1870s. He moved to San Jose, California between 1875 and 1876 and continued working as an insurance and loan agent. Sometime after 1881, he married Hannah B. Cooper, John L.
